      A technology sector corporate client completed the acquisition of a company in the same sector and announced plans to relocate 80 key employees to Atlanta, Georgia, and provided Oxxford their goals up front –

      1. merge two relocation policies,
      2. keep within a predetermined budget and timeframe, and
      3. achieve high employee satisfaction with a 98% capture rate.

      The client’s employees were being moved across the country and needed to be fully operational as quickly as possible. The client reported that Oxxford’s attention to detail and extremely high-touch customer service philosophy enabled them to achieve all their goals.

      One of Oxxford’s clients acquired a similar sized company through acquisition. Oxxford was tasked with merging and then implementing a new policy to meet the needs of the corporation and both populations of relocating employees. Both companies had a generous relocation program outsourced to third party relocation management companies.

      One of Oxxford’s clients acquired a similar sized company through acquisition. Oxxford was tasked with merging and then implementing a new policy to meet the needs of the corporation and both populations of relocating employees. Both companies had a generous relocation program outsourced to third party relocation management companies. To accomplish this integration, Oxxford performed a complete analysis of current relocation policies to include:

      • Benefits
      • Tiers
      • Preferred vendors

      Oxxford met with the key individuals from each company to determine which benefits were actually being used. We also evaluated the levels of the benefits. The merger did redefine the current levels. We were able to extract the most important element of the relocation program from each company. A budget was created for each tier/level. From there a suggested range of benefits was applied to each level. Oxxford identified that there was concern about the perception of the policy (i.e. the old Company A policy vs. the old Company B policy and “us” vs. “them”). The main goal was to create an equal, fresh policy which the employees would embrace. The end result was a mutually agreed to policy with a tool kit. The tool kit included additional benefits that Company A had been accustomed to using. Tracking the tool kit would be instrumental in the one-year review of the policy. In this situation, the goal for the policy merge was to create a “we” mentality as opposed to “us vs. them.” This is the most common goal when companies merge; but if the proper steps are not followed, the outcome is seldom successful and can result in additional policy changes and unhappy transferees from both sides. Companies also frequently integrate relocation policies as one of the last steps in the merger or acquisition. This does not negatively impact key executives who can secure exceptions to policy to meet their needs; however, mid-level employees can suffer as a result. It also makes tracking real policy exceptions for all levels extremely difficult.
